A Guide to Lube
July 19, 2010

Decent sexual lubricant is an absolute essential for any sex toy user: in order to supplement the body’s own natural lubricants, prevent potential injury or soreness as a result of using penetrative toys from the larger end of the spectrum and also to increase sensation. In addition to its use in conjunction with sex toys, lubricant can also be used to enhance the experience of masturbation and sex.
There is a huge selection of different sexual lubricants available and all differ at least slightly. The vast majority of lubricants do however generally fall into one of three categories: water-based, oil-based and silicone-based.
Water-based lubricants are by far the most commonly used and are much more readily available in pharmacies, supermarkets and the like. Water-based lubricants are for the most part suitable for any type of use: except sex acts in water. Despite their all-round usefulness, water-based lubricants do have a tendency to dry out quickly so regular re-application may be required.
Oil-based lubricants are not compatible for use with condoms as they can have adverse affects on the elasticity of latex. They are however particularly suited to those who are susceptible to minor skin conditions or irritation from the use of water-based lubricants which contain propylene, glycol or glycerine.
Silicone-based lubricants are a relatively modern creation and they offer some qualities which aren’t found in other types of lube. One of the most paramount of these unique features is that silicone lubricants are not absorbed by the skin and as such remain functional for considerably longer periods of time. On the downside, for the most part silicone-based lubricants are not suitable for use with silicone sex toys, as they can cause a deterioration of the toy’s surface.
Having established which type of lubricant is most suited to your requirements, there are then additional decisions to be made when choosing a lubricant. If you wish to use your lubricant for anal sex then a specific anal lube may be of interest courtesy of its more viscose solution and mild anaesthetic. Similarly, if you’re more interested in a lubricant which increases sensation then there are many different varieties on the market: tingle lube, warming lube and even cooling lube could add an exciting new dimension to your sex life. In addition to the various different chemical properties of different types of lube; many are also flavoured to make oral play even more exciting and enjoyable for all involved.
With so many different types of sexual lubricant on the market, it can be a little tough to choose the best one for you; at BeKinky we’ve found that different people particularly like different brands so we recommend experimenting with different brands and types until you find the lubricant which really gets you going.
